  1. I enjoyed very much your video in You Tube about wood thread cutting.
Are these hand tools available and how much are they?
    Hoping for your kind reply.

    • In Australia, available from Carbatec for around $A65. They are not locally-produced, so I imagine any decent sized woodworker supply store should be able to source them.

  2. Hi Stu.

This is Gino, I used to also do the Triton demo’s.

I was looking for a review on the Drill Doctor drill sharpener, but could not find one on your web site.
Do you have anything on this device or have reviewed it. As I’m thinking of buying one.

    thanks Gino

  3. Dear Sir: I own a Triton work centre with a missing protractor Code: 379330 Model: WCA251.- Would you like to help me to find one distributor or any place so I can buy it, please. I’m at Brisbane.-

  4. g’day love the timber hinge crafter! the latest carbatec booklet doesnt have it and neither does the website :( ….discontinued?

also, would you recommend only using that type of hinge system on, like you mentioned, small boxes? or could you hang a door for an entertainment unit? basically, is heavier weight an issue?\

    cheers stu :P

  5. I’m having problems cutting laminated (18mm) board. The laminate keeps chipping. I’m using a Triton Workcentre with the Triton 235mm precision circular saw. I have a new fine tooth blade fitted in tha saw. Please could you tell me what depth I should have the saw blade?

    • Hi Andy,

Preventing chipout of laminate is tricky, but can be done, so I’ll run through your options (and the more of these you can do, the better the result can be).

First, the blade height is set very low, so no more than 1/2 a tooth (as in the carbide portion of the tooth) is above the workpiece. This means the angle the blade tooth is presented to the laminate on the top side is a lot more horizontal than vertical, so the laminate isn’t punched out as the blade comes through. The tearout is primarily on the bottom edge where this is most pronounced.

Secondly, you can run a piece of masking tape along the underside the length of the cut line, which will help support the laminate to prevent breakout.

Third, professional machines that cut laminate have a second scoring blade in front of the main blade. This is a small diameter blade (6″ diameter or so), that is set to only cut through the laminate itself, then the work is cut with the main blade. This pre-cut prevents tearout on these machines. Most of us don’t have that secondary blade, but can duplicate its action by setting a very low blade height (1mm or so about the table), running the work through, then flip the work over, increase blade height to cut right through, and complete the cut. I’ve never resorted to this, but obviously it is an option.

Finally, you need a very sharp blade with an aggressive bevel angle, so the blade is more like two knives cutting the left and right edges of the kerf, than a chipping action. I have blades with this, and they don’t need any of the above-preparations to do a very clean cut in laminate.

Check out my “Battle of the Blades” to see the resulting photos of cutting laminate.

      Hope that helps!
      Stu
