Humble Beginnings

There are so many different reasons someone might catch the woodworking bug, and in so many cases it will be a combination of many small triggers. I think the toys you have as a kid can play a big part: it is the first experience of just how real timber products are. I wrote about [...]

Colour my (shed) world

Even from early shed days, there was an interesting trend in the colour schemes in the shed, that paralleled where I was at in terms of equipment, and woodworking in general. From slow beginnings, almost a precursor stage where there was an influence of GMC Blue.  This expanded somewhat, but then Triton orange appeared, and [...]

Convert Old TV Cabinets Into State of the Art Play Kitchens

Convert Old TV Cabinets Into State of the Art Play Kitchens The linked article proposes an absolutely brilliant idea for old entertainment (aka CRT screen-based) units.  Turning them into toy kitchens. Stunning work, and worth reading the background articles.  Genuine congratulations to both for such amazing repurposing of old furniture, and irrespective, a couple of [...]

Miniature Real Estate

And so it begins- hopefully it can be completed before my daughter’s birthday, this one or the next….. and not have it take so long that she will learn to read, let alone read this blog! Better be finished before she gets too old to play with it, let alone turn 16, 21 etc! It [...]

Working Bees

Was down at the local kindergarten on the weekend, as part of the working bee.  A fun little evolution, I’m surprised just how important the voluntary parents’ committee is to the integral running of the organisation.  If the parents don’t make something happen, it doesn’t get done! From painting, to gardening, sweeping and spider hunting, [...]

Traffic

Decided in the end to fully paint the roadsigns.  My reasoning in the end was simple: 3 and 4 year olds don’t care how something is made compared to how it looks. So after some final sanding, and last-minute wood carving, plus two coats of paint, the result looks pretty good

What Goes Around

Comes Around. Had pretty much forgotten about the first load of track that I’d made for a young friend (who isn’t so young anymore!)  So when going through some toys we have just been given for Jess, and her friends I found some very familiar track – 10 meters of it! Didn’t remember I had [...]

Berwick Woodworkers

Took an opportunity to visit Berwick Woodworkers at the old Cheese Factory, and admire their permanent clubrooms and workshops (including the new 2x shipping containers – one full of toys ready for Xmas distribution, and the other full of timber ready to be turned in the the aforementioned toys! I dragged along a Router Master [...]

Another Christmas, Another Commission

Once again (and this isn’t a complaint btw!), a Christmas approaches and I have an order for anther toy kitchen.  Well two actually, if you count one for my daughter (she doesn’t read my blog (yet) ) Making one ever 1 – 2 years is an interesting exercise, as you get a chance to incorporate [...]

A Real Market

I was up Gisborne-way over the weekend, one of those weddings that tried to miss the AFL Grand Final, and was caught out by the once-in-33 year draw the weekend prior (congratulations to Murray and Emma btw).  We chose to stay overnight, rather than drive back late and in the morning had breakfast in the [...]

Great American Wooden Toys

Been reading the Great Book of Wooden Toys, by a well known toymaker, Norm MarshallHas over 50 projects by the well-known American Toymaker Norm Marshall. All very inspiring, if only there was time to produce fruits from that inspiration. A wooden toy always beats a modern mass-produced one hands down.

Item Duplication on the Torque

There are a number of different ways of duplicating a pattern or item in woodworking.  A common method is to screw a pattern to the timber, use a jigsaw, scrollsaw or bandsaw to rough it out, then revert to a pattern copying bit on the router table.  This technique works well, but does have its [...]
