Do you have a stack of offcuts of sandpaper that still looks in good condition, but you cannot tell what they actually are (without guessing, or at least wasting quite a bit of time)? I know I have thrown away a lot of useful pieces for just that reason. Many resulting from frenetic work around [...]

Had a wander around a bit of a bric-a-brac / (unrefined) antiques shop recently, and found some interesting old boxes. These boxes are not jewelry boxes by any stretch of the imagination, but not every box needs to be a work of art to fulfill a need. I do see these boxes (from 40 to [...]

I was asked (by email) last night if I am still doing the videos/podcasts, seeing as it has been a month or so since the last. The simple answer is yes- I have a few in development (which is code for “in my head”), they just need to be shot. My only defence is that [...]

This is something I had never come across before, but it seemed I was in a minority of one in recent discussions. Perhaps it had never made it across the ditch (to NZ), or perhaps I’m just showing my age. I guess before the massive insurgence of cheap, mass produced power tools, getting the maximum [...]

For some really strange reason, the Federal Government did not have any idea that when they offered Solar Power subsidies of $8000 for people to fit 1kW solar power units to their homes (which can fully pay for a 1kW unit, fully installed) that people would actually take them up on the offer. The government [...]

As a follow-up to the timber-of-the-month featuring Queen Ebony, as sourced from the Brisbane Wood Show, SITCO Australia have sent some photos through to me of the timber being harvested. Some AMAZING heavy, thick planks of Queen Ebony. I’m imagining a heavy-topped Queen Ebony workbench – it would look incredible. Some amazing planks coming off [...]

Looking for a quick gauge of interest if this course was offered by Holmesglen (Chadstone Campus) as a 2 day / weekend course. The current course being offered is the Introductory Triton Woodworking course, but for the past year it has failed to gain enough attendees for it to run. I am therefore looking at [...]

Sometimes visiting the letterbox can be a pretty amazing experience! A certain benefactor of Stu’s Shed decided (as quite an amazing gesture) to give me a Festool RAS115. He wishes to remain anonymous, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t be stoked even so! The RAS115 is dubbed “The Termite” by Festool. It is not [...]

Had a play with one of those mulchers recently – you know the ones, sold to mulch up your garden waste and turn it into, well, mulch for your garden beds and trees. All I can say about it (given the model I tried wasn’t new, and probably needed its blades resharpened), who in their [...]

There was a bit of a rumour floating around the Brisbane show about Triton….and Bosch. As the rumour went, Bosch have bought up the existing stock of Triton Workcentre components with a view to paint them blue and release them under their brand. There is absolutely no substantiating evidence to confirm or deny the rumour [...]

At the recent Brisbane Wood Show, I picked up some interesting ebony, hand milled in the Solomons, and sold by SITCO Australia. It is also known locally (in the Solomons) as Tubi, and is marketed as a premium hardwood and as part of the Solomon Islands eco-timber products. For those who understand Latin: Xanthostemom melanoxylon- [...]

I’ve found in the past that Whiteside make a very tidy router bit, and this template bit is no exception. They don’t seem to go in for the coatings of some companies, and appear to concentrate on the manufacturing of router bits which look very precise, from the clean look of the bit, and its [...]
